Join Credit Union? It's Worth A Look

Consumers have a plethora of borrowing and saving options, including traditional banks, online-only banks, credit unions and investment brokerages.

And although Internet-only banks can offer the most competitive rates for saving and borrowing, credit unions offer a mix of favorable rates and personal service. They're often a good alternative to traditional banks, which still dominate the market.

Credit unions are affiliated groups of people who pool their money and lend it to each other. They don't have divided loyalties - trying to serve a customer at the same time as boosting profits and the stock price for shareholders.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was down 6.24 points or 0.5 percent at 1,290.24, off an intraday low of 1,288.48.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia 30-large cap index gained 5.68 points or 0.1 percent to 8,140.22 and the second board index dropped 0.20 points or 0.2 percent to 106.89.

Palagummi Sainath, author of the award-winning book Everybody Loves a Good Drought has an interesting story to relate. He says that during the one-week period of the fashion parade, while the entire nation was enthralled watching models walking down the ramp at a fashion show, over 400 farmers had committed suicide in Vidharbha.

While over 500 reporters covered the fashion event with television and print media vying for coverage, the farmers' deaths went totally unreported, according to Sainath, one of the recipients of this year's Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Asian version of the Nobel Prize, in the category of journalism, literature and creative communication.

Nearly 6,000 farmers have committed suicide in Karnataka since 2001.

With 3.3% of the total households in the country earning rupees one million and above per year, Bangalore ranks No.
